Herring has been popular in the Netherlands for centuries: just grabbed by the tail, or on a sandwich with some chopped onion.
This beloved fish has also meant a lot for the prosperity of the Netherlands. The seaman’s knowledge and the large fleet needed for fishing were used during trade and exploration voyages. Thanks in part to the herring, Holland had a ‘Golden Age’.
Herring was often depicted on Delft Blue pottery. This tea towel is inspired by the traditional Delft herring dishes.
