This bath towel is a ‘Lotto’ carpet, with characteristic stylized arabesques. Such carpets are named after the Italian painter Lorenzo Lotto who depicted them in his paintings in the 16th century.

In the Netherlands, these carpets were often used by the famous masters of the 17th century, such as Van Honthorst, Metsu, Breughel, Van Dijk, Steen and Vermeer. The Lotto carpets gave the paintings an exotic accent and functioned as a status symbol for the portrayed: as a rug under the feet of rulers and saints, or on the table of rich merchants and distinguished regents.

Lotto carpets probably came from Anatolia and can be recognized by a red center with yellow arabesques. The outer edges differ greatly: early copies often have a ‘Kufic script’ motif, later cartouches and cloud edges also appear. The midfield arabesques have three different styles: the Anatolian, the kilim and the decorated style.

This carpet has a kilim style midfield and a border with cartouches.
