Hindelooper Basket

Design: Piet Design

The decoration on this basket is based on the Hindelooper painting art. Hindeloopen is a small town in Friesland with a great trading history. The Hindelooper navigators first sailed with the Hanseatic League to Scandinavia and later with the VOC to the Far East. The local folk art is therefore a colorful mixture of motifs from Norway and India, among others.

Characteristic of the Hindelooper painting are the basic colors dark green, oxblood red, ocher yellow, Prussian blue and cream. The flowers, curls and wavy lines on this basket are executed in shadow work that traditionally has a limited color scheme.

The construction of the basket goes back to examples from the Middle Ages when this particular basket shape was made in England from thin planks. The way in which the wooden bands overlap is originally from shipbuilding and was already used in the time of the Vikings.

With this kit you can make a Hindelooper basket yourself.
